Vortex Diamondback 8×42 Binoculars Review

For the average person, a cheap pair of binoculars is all that is needed to get the job done. For serious hunters, however, binoculars with more refined optics are required. If you’re looking for a superior set of binoculars look no further than the Vortex Diamondback 8×42. In this article, we’re going to be reviewing the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 binoculars and detailing the reasons that you should choose this product over its competitors.

Things to Consider Before Buying Hunting Binoculars

Before you begin the tedious task of finding the right pair of binoculars, you need to understand the factors that you should consider amidst your search.

Before buying a pair of binoculars, you should determine the magnification power that you will require of the device. Additionally, you’ll want to inspect the objective lens diameter of each pair of binoculars. For low light conditions, a bigger diameter is better. You’ll find the objective lens diameter as the number following the “x” in the product description. You’ll also want to look at the weight and waterproofing on each pair of binoculars.

For the products in this article, we will be rating based on three criteria: optical features, construction features, and convenience features.

Optical features include the specifications of the magnification, lens dimensions, lens type, lens coating, and any other element of the type.

Construction features include prism design, body material, weight, and whether or not the product is fog proof or waterproof.

Convenience features include the field of view, focusing distance, eye-relief, focusing ability, diopter, and tripod adopter.

Presenting the Vortex Diamondback 8×42

The Vortex Diamondback 8×42 are binoculars for hunters and birdwatchers. The objective lens diameter of these binoculars is extraordinary. A ratio of 5 is considered optimal for lens diameter. The ratio of 8:42 quite close to this optimal figure. The magnification level of these binoculars is also good for most users. It is suggested to find magnification level between 7 and 10.

Pros

  • Perfect for low light conditions
  • High-end rubber coating that doesn’t wear
  • Excellent warranty

Cons

  • Lens caps do not always stay secure
  • The view becomes slightly fuzzy at the far edge
  • Features and Benefits

Weight

The weight of the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 binocular is 21.8 ounces, a whole 4 ounces lighter than the previous version. This keeps these binoculars light in your hand and easy to handle in use.

Shape

The shape of these binoculars is also excellent. The interpupillary distance is slightly smaller than the previous model at 55 mm compared to the previous 57 mm. This isn’t a noticeable distance change for most adults, but it could help a growing child grow into these binoculars faster.

Contrast and Resolution

The visuals of these binoculars are impressive as well. Thanks to the dielectric coatings on the internal prisms, you are likely to experience increased contrast and resolution while keeping the colors of the image strong and clear.

Field of View

The field of view on the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 binoculars is less than its predecessor but it isn’t anything to scoff at either. It is 393 feet at 1000 yards, this offers you a distance that is impressive.

You don’t get a narrow field of view either. With the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 binoculars offer a field of view that allows you to see right in front of you while offering peripheral vision as well.

Alternatives

Three alternatives to the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 that we will be discussing.

Vortex Optics Viper HD 8×42

The first is the Vortex Optics Viper HD 8×42. This pair of binoculars has the same magnification level and objective lens diameter as the Vortex Diamondback 8×42. The Vortex Optics Viper HD, however, is significantly less budget friendly. It does, however, offer a high definition image and multi-layer prism coatings for a resolution and high contrast image. Overall, a quality product, but it does not be the excellent price of the Vortex Diamondback 8×42.

  • HD Extra-Low Dispersion Glass
  • Multi-Layer Prism Coatings
  • Scratch Resistant Coating for Protection

Bushnell Legend L-Series Binocular 8x42mm

The second alternative is the Bushnell Legend L-Series Binocular 8x42mm. This option is more budget friendly than the other options that we have looked at in this article. It offers a 426-foot field of view, placing it at a larger field of view than the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 binoculars.

  • Budget-Friendly
  • 426-Foot Field of Vision

Nikon MONARCH 5 8×42 Binocular.

Again, this product is quite similar to the Vortex Diamondback. The Nikon model has a slightly smaller exit pupil, which determines how much light enters the eye. Conversely, the Nikon model has a further close focus distance, which may be an attractive feature to some buyers.

  • Further Close Focus Distance
  • Extra Low-Dispersion Glass
  • Eco-Glass Lenses for High Light Transmittance
  • Turn and Slide Rubber Eyecups
  • Waterproof

When you are searching for the right pair of binoculars, it is important to consider all your options. Don’t mark these options out compared to the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 binoculars before you make your final decision.

Conclusion

The objective lens diameter of the Vortex Diamondback 8×42 is such that movement can be seen even in low light conditions. The water and fog proof construction make this device excellent for all weather conditions. Overall, this is a high-quality pair of binoculars that won’t let you down when you need them.

Bushnell has maintained their position in the market with their outstanding binoculars that excel at both quality and price. Bushnell Legend Ultra HD is not an exception here. But first, let’s see if they can live up to their expectations.

undefined

Optical Features (4.6/5)

undefined

ED Prime glass gives clear images of HD quality in any situation. This special glass makes viewing objects easier even in low light environments. 42mm objective lens along with a magnification that goes up to 10x makes this binocular a great choice for wildlife viewing.

undefined

The Ultra Wide Band coating makes the lenses more susceptible even in minimal lighting.

undefined

Construction Features (4.8/5)

undefined

These Bushnell binoculars are built on a magnesium chassis which is really lightweight, weighing just at 2.2 pounds. This durable frame makes it easy to carry around for extended periods. These also come with a roof prism design along with Bak-4 glass making it easier to handle.

undefined

The rubber armour provides a comfortable grip for anyone and the neck strap helps in carrying it freely.

undefined

The Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 10×42 binoculars will definitely not fog up or be put off by rain in any situation for their RainGuard HD Water-repellent coating. So, you can carry it on hikes with confident.

undefined

Convenience Features (4.5/5)

undefined

The twist-up eyecups are two staged, having 3mm increments at every stage. For this, they have a comfortable feel. Eye Relief, on the other hand, is a bit low, only 15.2 mm. But it’s suitable for most of the eye types.

undefined

Bushnell Legend Ultra HD binoculars have a field of view at 1,000 yds. /m or 340 ft., which is pretty good for this sized binocular.

undefined

The close focusing distance is 8 ft. keeping you pretty close to the action. A great distance for bird watching. The locking Diopter will help you maintain your settings which will save you the trouble of straining your eyes. It’s also tripod adaptable.

undefined

Price (5/5)

undefined

The price is quite low for all these features. As like any other Bushnell binoculars, this one also provides quality with price. All the materials and quality of lenses are surely worth the price.

undefined

How does it compare?

undefined

undefined

Vortex Optics Viper HD and Bushnell Legend Ultra HD, have the same objective lens dimensions and magnifications features, but Vortex comes at a higher price.

undefined

Although the image quality is much better in Vortex rather than Bushnell. Vortex also excels at eye relief with 16.5 mm which is better than Bushnell.

undefined

Bushnell Ultra HD excels in other categories such as field of view, focusing distance, angular view.

undefined

If you want better image quality then you can go for Vortex Optics Viper HD 10×42, but it’s going to be a little heavy on the pocket.

undefined

undefined

It’s another great binocular for bird watching. Both the Bushnell’s have similar magnification, image quality, and body material. But Bushnell Legend L-Series weighs a little less than Bushnell Legend Ultra HD, at 1.5 pounds. The L-series also has a better eye relief of 18mm, making it available for any eye types.

undefined

It also comes at a lower price. It’s recommended if you wear glasses.

undefined

undefined

It’s lighter than Bushnell Legend Ultra HD, weighing only at 1.35 pounds. It has the same optical features as the Bushnell Legend Ultra. The only difference is the eye relief and field of view. Nikon 7577 MONARCH 5 has a better eye relief 18.4 mm but it only has a 315 ft. field of view which is lower than Bushnell Ultra. Also, it comes at a higher price.

undefined

Finally,

undefined

Ultra HD 10×42 is truly one of the best binocular for bird watching on the market. With its lightweight, attractive and high-quality image it really is a great deal at this price. If you want one, that can withstand a harsh weather with a no compromises in the output, then you should definitely go for it.

Review

Nikon needs absolutely no introduction, as it dominates all manufacturers of lenses, cameras, and various photo accessories. But are the Nikon 7296 Monarch ATB 12×42 Binoculars worth it? Well, let’s see!

Optical Features (4.7/5)

The multi-coated lenses provide a surprisingly clear and detailed image. Their huge 12x magnification power makes them perfect for birding in open areas and even for stargazing. The 42 millimeters improve sighting during the early morning, dusk and evening.

Construction Features (5/5)

The rubber coating ensures that your grip on the binoculars will be firm and that they won’t slip out of your hands if wet. The body of the binoculars will not be damaged if dropped to the ground or in water – you can take them when hiking and boating, as well.

Convenience Features (5/5)

The central focus system is one of the main reasons why people love this. It accounts for the fact that your eyes will not become sore or strained, even if you use them for hours at a time. Even though they are bulky, they’re lighter than you might think.

For even more convenience and stability, they can be installed on a tripod. The adjustment wheel moves properly and can be handled with one hand.

Price (4/5)

Some people might find these binoculars to be hugely overpriced. It certainly looks that this is not a problem to many because they know they get the guaranteed Nikon quality. Subsequently, they purchase this item anyway.

We think that the price is 100% justified and reflects the quality of the product – from our standpoint, we can recommend them to all those who have a penchant for birding. They are worth every dollar.

How Does It Compare?

1. Nikon 7576 MONARCH 5 8×42

These also have multi-coated lenses, extra-low dispersion glass, and multilayer prism coatings. The magnification power is a tad smaller (8x), but the lenses are the exact same 42 mm.

The main differences between them are the price and the magnification power. As far as we are concerned, we’re inclined to say that the Monarch 5 has gotten more attention to detail poured into them and are lighter than the Monarch ATB.

One more advantage that the Monarch 5 has over the ATB is the field of view: the former has a FOV of 330 feet, whereas the latter a FOV of 262 feet.

2. Vortex Optics Diamondback 10×42 Roof Prism Binocular

The Vortex and the Monarch ATB have identical specs and are in similar price ranges (though you’ll have to pay $20-$30 more for the Vortex). Just like in the previous situation, the Vortex wins when it comes to FOV.

It has a FOV of a whopping 345 feet, while Monarch ATB’s field of view is just 262 ft. Apart from this rather important difference, they are approximately identical in terms of specs.

3. Nikon 8249 ACULON A211 12×50 Binocular

The Nikon 8249 is 2x cheaper than the Monarch ATB and it also crushes it when it comes to the size of the objectives and the field of view: the objectives are 50 mm and the FOV is 272 feet, 10x bigger than the ATB’s.
The advantage of the ATB over the 8249 is that it is waterproof and fog proof. There is no specification of this sort regarding the Nikon 8249. These represent the cheapest alternative to a more expensive Nikon.

Our Verdict

We chose to go with the Monarch ATB because, in spite of their rather limited FOV, they are extremely durable and provide a crystal-clear image. They are also incredibly helpful to people who wear glasses.

Their weight is also an advantage (1.5) since it makes them portable by excellence. They are fairly expensive but definitely worth the investment.

 Review

Celestron is a leading company when it comes to the manufacturing of optics, but have they lived up to their huge reputation with the Celestron Skymaster 25 x 70 Binoculars? There is only one way to find out. Let’s go!

Optical Features(4/5)

This device features a magnification of 25x, which enables you to view images from far away distances, therefore its ability to view terrestrial images as well as astronomical images. Also, with the device’s long eye relief, you can enjoy excellent viewing without needing to sacrifice comfort. And for people who don’t want to compromise on visual sharpness, the multi-coated optics of the device enhances clarity by delivering crisp and clear images.

Construction Features(4/5)

This excellent device features a protective rubber cover which allows for easier outdoors use. This is due to the fact that you won’t need to worry about knocks and drops unless the knocks are extremely intense. This is because of the rubber material used on the binocular’s cover. Besides, rubber provides you with a firm grip regardless of the weather or the situation.

Convenience Features(4/5)

All thanks to the large center focusing knob which was strategically positioned, focusing is extremely easy with this device and every user will greatly appreciate this.

Price(5/5)

As far as price is concerned, the Celestron Skymaster 25 x 70 Binoculars is one of the cheapest binoculars you can find on the market. However, that is not to say it is ineffective because its performance is actually impressive, considering its cheap cost. If you are looking for a budget-friendly binocular without compromising on important features, then this is the ideal device for you.

How does it compare?

Orion 51464 20×80 Astronomy Binoculars

Featuring larger objective lens and high-transmission BAK four prisms, it is easy to see why the Orion 51464 20×80 Astronomy Binoculars is priced higher than the Celestron Skymaster. While the Celestron Skymaster features 12mm eye relief, which is impressive, the Orion 51464 even features a more impressive eye relief of 17mm.

If you are looking for high-quality performance and great functionalities while not minding the cost, you should go for the Orion 5164. However, if you are looking for a budget-friendly option with decent functionalities, the CelestronSkyMaster25 x 70 would be ideal for you.

Celestron SkyMaster 25X100 ASTRO Binoculars

While both devices feature fully multicoated optics and have the same magnification, the 25 x 100 ASTRO Binoculars is slightly better when it comes to the objective lens. With the 100mm objective lens on the 25 X 100 Astro Binoculars, you can view images even when there is poor ambient light. However, the SkyMaster 25 x 100 ASTRO Binoculars cost a lot more than the other device from Celestron.

Celestron is a big brand and all their products are usually reliable, but if you can afford it, it would be better to go for the Celestron Skymaster 25 x 100 Astro Binoculars.

Celestron Skymaster 20×80 Binoculars

Another excellent model from Celestron is the Celestron Skymaster 20 x 80 Binoculars. While it has almost the same features as the main product in the review, it has a larger objective lens and longer eye relief and is priced higher.  However, our main product has a better magnification, which is a plus, considering it costs less.

Do you prefer better magnification to a larger objective lens or vice versa? Your answer will play a big part in your choice between these two devices.

Conclusion

The Celestron Skymaster 25 x 70 binocular is an excellent viewing device. While it doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles of more expensive models, nobody can deny its obvious qualities. If you are on a budget and you are looking for a high performance binocular, then the SkyMaster 25 x 70 Binocular is the way to go.

Looking for high performing binoculars which you can hold and view for very long hours without straining your arms or eyes? Leupold Mojave, with its open bridge design, lightweight aluminum body, and good optical resolution make the prolonged viewing from the binoculars a great pleasure.

Key Features

  • The open bridge design, we think is the ideal design for holding a binocular for the prolonged view.
  • Aluminum body makes it lighter in weight and can comfortably hold it for a longer duration.
  • Multi-coated, Extra-low dispersion lenses give crisp and clear view closer to natural colors.
  • Nitrogen gas filled to make it waterproof & fogproof. Can carry these on your boating trip.
  • angle-double-right
Comes in typhoon black and oak treestand finish. Its rugged look and design make it stand apart from other binoculars.

Review

Leupold is a great brand from America manufacturing optical instruments from 1907. Does Leupold`s Bx-3 Mojave Binoculars live up to the reputation? Are they worth the price?

Optical features (4.5/5)

Its multi-coated, Extra-low dispersion lenses give a clear & crisp view and the colors closer to reality. Its 10X magnification is suitable for hunting in open areas, bird watching and for most of the general purpose. 42mm objective lens is good enough for the low light hunting in the evenings.

Construction features(5/5)

It is roof prism binoculars and on top of it, its open bridge design makes it very convenient to hold and easily adjust the focus with both the hand. Unlike most of the binoculars with the plastic body, this one has the premium aluminum body. Its low weight aluminum body is another factor which makes it very convenient in the hands.

Its filled with nitrogen gas to make it waterproof and fog proof. Its rugged look and aluminum material body, lightweight, waterproof/fog proof, withstanding all weather conditions makes it ideal for any rough and tough activities like hiking, trekking, boating etc.

Convenience features(4.5/5)

The center focus wheel is very smooth and close focus distance is under 7.5 feet. 6.2 degrees of angular field of view provides a good view and better than most others at this price range.

Price (4/5)

From an average user`s standpoint of view Mojave Bx-3 might seem little costly as we find other binoculars with similar features and specs. But all binoculars are not equally made in spite of common features. Leupold is a great brand and each of their product lives up to their reputation. The quality of the material, lenses, design is superior to other cheaper alternatives. If it is not a burden on your pocket, it is highly recommended and worth its price.

How does it compare?

The same magnification & objective lens dimension, 10X42 more or less serves the same purpose as Mojave 10x42, comes at a lower price. But it comes with a rubber armored chassis unlike aluminum chassis of Mojave. Also, lenses and image quality seem superior in Mojave. It has a better field of view (319 ft/ 1000 yd) compared to Mojave`s 267 ft/ 1000 yd.

The primary advantages over Mojave 10x42 are a better field of view and price.

Same objective lens dimension but less magnification than Mojave 10x42. That makes it more compact and lighter in weight. It can be very comfortably carried along while traveling. 8x42 is recommended for hunters hunting in bushers while 10x42 is recommended for hunting in open areas. Also, 8x42 is lower in price.

If you prefer compactness, you could go for it.

It comes with the widest field of view (351 ft/ 1000 yd) in this range. It is also little lower in price compared to Mojave 10x42 and serves the more or less same purpose. It comes with durable rubber armor coating and it is an all terrain binoculars.

On the whole, we like the Mojave 10x42 for its slick open bridge design, low weight, the rugged aluminum body which can withstand all weathers and terrains. On top of it, the brand Leupold. Go for it if your budget permits.
